Why Do They Do It?

  • Insecurity or Stress  Dogs who are unsure of their environment  can mount as a way to relieve stress.
  • Dominance  Dogs try to show dominance by mounting another dog
  • Reproductive Rehearsal   Play is ofttimes used to hone behaviors that will be needed some time in the future.
  • Hormones   This tends to appear during adolescence and can be seen in both male and female dogs.  It can then become a learned behavior
  • General Excitement  This does not mean arousal. Rather, the dog got super excited  about life in general and this was one way he could express it.
  • That Special Moment  Of course, this would be when you were mating two dogs for a purpose. What's important to know is that  most of the time mounting is usually not about love and babies.
