Homeopathic
remedies have been used to treat people and animals since the late 18 th century. Homeopathy has, historically, been particularly effective with children. In the same manner, puppies often respond very well to homeopathic treatment. Homeopathic treatments
produce a smarter, healthier and more resilient body. They work with the body. That’s why I highly recommend using homeopathic treatments with puppies. Starting young, during a time when a puppy has a high vital force, trains her body to maintain better health naturally as she grows. Let’s
start at the very beginning, when the puppy is still in the womb, and then move on to problems that can occur during the birthing. For a puppy with a congenital hernia: whether the hernia is inguinal or umbilical, first give a dose of Sulphur 30C. If this doesn’t work, give a dose of Nux vomica 30C a few times a day over a period of two to three days, followed by one more dose of Sulphur 30C. I have found that most umbilical hernias in puppies resolve un- eventfully with homeopathic treatment. For rash on abdomen of young puppies, a few doses of Rhus toxicodendron 6X or Sulphur 30C will usually do the job. You can also wash the area in a diluted Calendula tincture. For fading puppy syndrome (also known as canine herpes). The pups may have soft greenish stools, labored breathing, retching and vomiting. Give Rescue Remedy to all the pups, particularly before bed. Keep the pups warm and dry. Begin with Aconite 6C or 30C four times in one hour and then every hour for four hours. Follow this with Arsenicum album 6X or 30X, eight times in the first day for retching and diarrhea and signs of abdominal
discomfort. One or two doses of Silicea 30C is also a good remedy to follow with when all has settled down. "Homeopathic treatments produce a smarter, healthier and more resilient body" For nutritional anemia: at about two weeks of age, pups may develop a paleness of the visible mucous
membranes and progressive weakness. The remedies to use include Trinitrotoluene 30C, Ferrum Iodatum 6C and China 30C. I recommend starting with China 30C three times a day and Ferrum Iodatum 6C once a day. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy can occur in older puppies up to the time of weaning and is characterized by swellings at the end of the long bones. This is painful and the pup will be unwilling to walk long dis- tances and may have a high temperature. The first remedy to try is Calcarea fluorica 30C. This remedy should not be repeated too often. It’s a very
good general remedy for bone conditions. Ruta gravolens 6C is also good for the initial inflammatory re- action involving the periosteum of bones. Ruta can be given three to five times a day. GENERAL PUPPY
PROBLEMS Carsickness. Cocculus 6X is the first choice for controlling travel sickness. Give twice before travel, with doses a half hour apart, then as needed. Diarrhea. China 6X or 30X is a phenom- enal remedy for diarrhea and can be given every two hours or so. Podophyllum 6X is great for puppy diarrhea that’s light brown or yellow colored while Aloe is a good remedy if there’s a great urgency to go. All of these remedies can be combined and/or given at the same
or similar times. Arseni- cum album 6X or 30X is very good for vom- iting and diarrhea, although with a young puppy you should be ready to get to the veterinarian if the Arsenicum doesn’t clear up the problem quickly (it often does!). A diet of well-cooked watery white rice with beaten eggs scrambled into the rice should be given in addition to any remedies. Homesickness. When the puppy is sepa- rated from her litter mates and is getting used to new surroundings, Ignatia 30X three or four times a day for a few days will help soothe the transition. If a dog has been abandoned and has many losses of human companionship, the remedy Natrum muriaticum 6X given three times a day for a week or so will often help
ease deep grief. Kennel Cough. Antimonium tartaricum 6X along with Aconitum naellus (Aconite) 6X Caulophyllum will help establish a normal pregnancy, regulating the entire gesta- tion. Its use during the birthing is its real claim to fame. A few doses of Caulophyllum 30C during birth can help with a smooth and uneventful delivery. Uterine inertia
responds beautifully to this remedy. AFTER THE BIRTH For swelling and elongation of the puppy’s head due to a difficult birth, give Arnica 6X, four to six times a day. Rinse the head lightly a few times with cold water, being careful to keep the puppy warm. If the puppy is not better in two days, try Rhus toxicodendron 6X, four to six times a day. For a puppy who’s blue at birth and having difficulty breathing, give one dose of Sulphur 30C immediately. After an interval of three hours, one dose of Calcarea carbonica 6X can be given. Another remedy that can be given concurrently if the puppy is gasping is Carbo vegetabilis 6X or 6C every half hour to start, until the puppy is comfortable and
Drosera 6X, all at six times a day, will usually clear it up in no time at all. You can add a good brand of colloidal silver in the following dosage amounts three times a day for good measure: under 15 lbs, 1/3 tsp, 15-35 lbs 1⁄2 tsp, 35-75 1 tspl Parvovirus. Parvo can be life-threatening and additional conventional supportive treatment from your veterinarian is often necessary. Intravenous or subcutaneous fluids are usually needed to avoid dehydration. However, you can use homeopathic remedies to provide support for your puppy. As soon as possible, begin with Aconite in a 6C or 30C potency. Give it four times in the first hour and then every hour for four
hours. Rescue Remedy should be used in every case. Phosphorus 30C is the remedy of choice to control vomiting and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. Give this three to six times a day for at least one day and preferably two or three days,
depending on the response. Arsenicum album 30C is also an excellent remedy for vomiting and diarrhea. The remedies Phosphorus and Arsenicum album complement each other so they can both be given on the same day but at different times. Arsenicum can be given four times a day. If there’s considerable blood in the stool the remedy Crotalus horridus 6C or 30C is one of the main antihemorrhagic remedies. Frequent doses are recommended until you see the bleeding resolve. China 30C will help to maintain electrolyte balance. Iris versicolor 6X is a good remedy
after the acute symptoms have passed as it regenerates the digestive system. Iris versicolor is an excellent remedy for pancreatitis, by the way. Ringworm. This is a fungus that causes a circular lesion of missing fur on the skin. The remedy
Bacillinum quickly works miracles. You can get this remedy from the UK on Amazon.com as US homeopathic pharmacies are no longer allowed to carry it due to FDA regulations. You can use any potency above 30C twice a day for two weeks. Teething. Chamomilla 6C is the remedy of choice for teething. Make sure you give a couple of doses (one after dinner and one before bed in the evening. Worms. For the remedies below, give one dose daily for 21 days, wait seven days and repeat for 21 days. The problem in checking results with fecal examinations is that false negative
results are exceptionally common, so you may need to get more than one fecal test done and watch your puppy
carefully for con- tinuing symptoms. Ask your vet if you’re unsure. Only use one remedy at a time and do not combine remedies. Hookworms Thymol 3X Chenopodium 3X Roundworms Cina Maritima - Wormseed Potencies 3X, 6X and 6C can be used. Ferrum Metallicum, Chenopodium, Santonium, Omphalia in a 3X, 6X, 30X potency Tapeworms Felix Mas - use in low potency 3X to 6X Granatum in a 3X to 6X potency - all worms respond to this remedy. Use in low
potency. HOW TO GIVE THE REMEDIES Homeopathic remedies come in both pellet, granule and liquid form, depending on where you buy them. The liquid form is usually
preserved with alcohol and can have from 20 percent to 87 percent alcohol. Dogs and especially cats typically don’t like the taste of the higher alcohol preparation but you can easily dilute it in water before dosing. Take several drops of the liquid preparation of the homeopathic remedy and add it to a one or two ounce dropper bottle (preferably amber glass) that contains distilled or spring water (no tap water). Give your dog a few drops each time, directly into the mouth. When using the
liquid form, you don’t have to pry open the puppy’s mouth. Simply put a few drops on the gums or inner lips and as long as it reaches the mucous membrane it will be fine. Homeopathic remedies also come in tablet or pellet form. The size
of the tablets and pellets vary, and we humans would just let whatever size pellet we’re using melt in our mouths. That doesn’t happen with pets. In my practice I used the very tiny #15 sized pellets. These ones are so small that they’ll stick to your dog’s gums and she can’t spit them out so
they have to melt. Dogs often spit out the larger tablets and pellets. That said, the pellets are coated with
the remedy so if they stay in the mouth for a few seconds, the remedy has likely reached the mucous membranes. You can do one of two things if the only remedies you can get at the health food store are with the larger sized pellets. 1 Crush them in a small folded piece of paper and then use the folded paper to slide the powder into your dog’s mouth. 2 Add several pellets to a one or two ounce dropper bottle (just like above) and shake. Now you have a liquid preparation of the remedy. Make up a new, fresh preparation of liquid remedies every week or two as there are no preservatives in the bottle. I know that many homeopaths say that you shouldn’t handle the remedies. I don’t subscribe to that belief. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years and I can assure you that they work just fine. As long as your hands are clean I’ve found you can handle the pellets without a problem. IMPORTANT: Give remedies away from food and never mix them in food. If your pet has just eaten it’s best to wait about 20 minutes or more to give the remedies. Also, they should be given 20 minutes or more before a meal. Again, I’ve been doing this for a long time and if your schedule permits you to wait only 5 minutes this is fine to do, but 20 or more minutes away is
best. HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE The most important thing to remember is that the number of pellets or drops of liquid is not critical. In fact, it’s not at all important. You can give one pellet to an elephant or ten to a mouse. The size of the pellets is also not important. How is this possible? It’s because you are administer- ing the energy of the medicine and not the actual material substance of that medicine. With these remedy recommendations, you’re now well prepared to take care of many ailments at home for your new junior family
