In February 2022 Geordi started scratching frantically... developing sores.... and his coat began to fall out in chunks. He also had a moldy odor which would return two hours after a bath.
The local vet did a skin scraping and saw nothing unusual in the skin cells. [As Dr. Khalsa told me, these
mites live way down deep and cannot be found.]
Two rounds of steroids and antibiotics were prescribed, and while this did ease some of the symptoms, the skin issues continuned when Geordi went off the meds.
The next step was to try Apoquel or give Cytopoint injections; which I was not prepared to do.
By the fall 2022 both Geordi and I were miserable. I dressed him in a Onesie to prevent him from scratching and biting his skin and
bathed him every two days. Even so, there wasn’t much relief.
I went to a holistic clinic for people, and there it was recommended I consult with Dr. Khalsa who reviewed the medical records and set us on a path to restore Geordi’s health.
Dr. Khalsa diagnosed scabies with Malassezia and started with 6 weeks of treatments for scabies followed with remedies for the Malassezia and holistic products to repair the skin and grow the coat.
It was a slow process, and at last we had relief. Geordi’s skin became less inflamed, and the odor went away. [Dr. Khalsa... 'The scabies Rx is pretty quick but the yeast had to be handled and that takes a bit of elbow grease.']
Now, his bathing is down to once a week, and the coat is growing and returning to its silky texture.
Geordi is a happy boy again.
Many thanks to Dr. Khalsa and her determination to avoid synthetic medications and use natural alternatives that worked with his body to restore a healthy balance.
