In September of 2025, Lulu was visibly not herself—drinking lots of water (very unusual for her), wetting indoors, shaking as if cold, low energy, and seeming depressed. The vet suspected kidney issues or cystitis. A few days passed, and Lulu wasn’t improving. Her spirit was fading, and she began limping on her left hind leg.
She was given doxycycline for 30 days, but by then Lulu wasn’t eating. We spoon-fed her to get the doxy down. On 9/15, a second vet diagnosed a bad ear infection and said to continue the doxy with steroid and antibiotic ear washes. Lulu worsened. Our veterinarian suggested that it wasn’t fair to keep her alive for us. You see, by this time, we were carrying her outside to relieve herself and inside to
rest on our bed. She did not move at all by herself and did not eat.
The day after the third vet visit, we took her to her favorite place. Of course we had to carry her and she just stood there and collapsed. We were both crying, knowing her time was near.
I had made the first appointment I could get with Dr.Deva Khalsa and it was later that day. We felt it was time to put her down. Lulu had no energy left.
As Lulu lay in the kitchen- I had Dr. Khalsa on speakerphone and Lulu could hear her voice and listen in.
Amazingly, as we were in the process of telling Dr. Khalsa that we thought it was too late and Lulu was too far gone and we decided to let her go on the advice of our local veterinarian.................... and I still cannot understand how this dog who could not get up did this…… but the moment I rolled a ball on the
floor, Lulu perked up and chased it. It was seemingly impossible.
I think it was with the help of hearing Dr. Khalsa’s positive voice.
Dr. Khalsa brought hope back into our
lives!
