A really sweet dog came to my house; and you know me I took her in. I'm calling her Coppertone. I think she was so grateful for my kindness she decided to give something back to me; she gave me a gift of 6 adorable puppies.
Not
ever experiencing a dog give birth or the stages of puppyhood it's been an experience. She's a great mom; we think it was her first time as well as mine. During her birth she did exactly what she was supposed to do. It was funny every time she ate the afterbirth (gross) she would burp, if it was me, I would have thrown up. Four came out one right after another pretty fast, I tried to help her by whipping them down as the next one was coming out.
Then there was a long pause I thought she was done, so I changed the bedding since it was wet. I no sooner got it all cleaned up and here comes one more and then another. Six total. She plopped them out like it was no big deal- when people give birth it's a big deal with just one.
So now we're done giving birth it's time to eat. So cute when they're eating, they're wagging their little tails. At first all they did was nurse, it seemed like they were permanently attached. I was worried she didn't drop enough milk.
These were really big
pups for a dog her size. She's a medium sized dog weighing 45 lbs. with 6 puppies. If I didn't know who the father was, I would swear she mated with a bull mastiff. So, to make sure they were gaining weight I kept weighing them. At first, they looked all head with a tiny body. After a few days she dropped lots and lots of milk,
puppies got bigger bodies started to fill in so they weren't all head. That was the first week. Second week pretty quiet eating and sleeping. They were jerking in their sleep I got worried but then read that was normal.
Now we are on the third week.
Lots going on exciting. Eyes are open. Walking at first wobbly, better now. Growling and barking. They're walking all over, climbing on each other and mom; sucking on each other, but the big deal is they come to me. Thery are so adorable. The next phase will be switching them to solid food. We're not there yet so don't know how that's going to go.
In the meantime, you're wondering where the Dad is, he's here. She didn't come to my house alone, he came with her, but he was afraid and wouldn't come to me. We took her in, and provided food, water, shelter and a name.
His name is Buddy.
I think Buddy loves her, and it was not a one-night fling. He gets to see her all the time Coppertone is potty trained so when she goes for a walk he follows keeping his distance. We are hoping to gain his trust so they could be together.
